Skype is a internet based software which you can use for free to call someone. The person you are calling will need to be logged on to recive the call. If you pay real money you can call normal cellphones too, but most people prefers to use it for free. 

The program was first released in 2003 by Estonian Devolopers. They also originally devoloped Kazaa. The project was funded by two guys, the first one came from Sweden, and the 2nd one came from denmark. It grew and achieved over 600,000 registered users. After this Microsoft bought the platform for $8,5 billion dollar!

Skype has a amazing security system, it's impossible to break it. You register and you don't need to worry about anyone that will hack you or anything like that, it won't happen. The software has an encryption system  for security. Every user will have an unique username so other people can contact them with that username. Skype also have some unique emoticons which is really cool.

Skype supports calls with up to 25 people at one time. They also supports video calls, screen sharing and group video calls up to 10 people at once. But for the group VIDEO calls you will need to have premium which you can buy from Skype.com
